Transmitter Setup Basics: Trim, Endpoints, and Dual Rate
The dials on your crawler's transmitter aren't decoration. Here's what trim, endpoints, and dual rate actually do, and how to set them in ten minutes.
Every micro crawler comes with a transmitter, and almost every beginner uses it exactly the way it came out of the box. I did too. I drove an SCX24 for weeks with the steering pulling slightly left, assumed it was the truck, and never touched the little dials next to the wheel because I didn’t know what they did.
They do a lot. Trim, endpoints, and dual rate are the three settings that matter for crawling, and you can have all three sorted in about ten minutes on the bench. None of them cost anything. All of them change how the rig feels to drive.
Power On and Off in the Right Order
Before anything else: transmitter on first, then the truck. When you’re done, truck off first, then the transmitter.
The reason is simple. If the receiver powers up with no transmitter signal to lock onto, it can pick up noise and do something you didn’t ask for. On a crawler that usually just means a twitch. It’s still a bad habit worth not forming.
Get in the routine now and it becomes automatic.
Trim: Finding Center
Trim moves the neutral point of a channel. On a crawler you care about two: steering trim and throttle trim.
Steering trim is the one you’ll use constantly. Put the truck on a stand or a flat surface, take your hands off the wheel, and look at it head-on from the front. If the front wheels aren’t pointing dead straight, click the steering trim toward the correction until they are. On most stock radios that’s a small dial or a pair of buttons labeled ST TRIM.
Here’s the part nobody tells you: trim is a correction for center, not a fix for a mechanical problem. If you have to run trim near its limit to get the wheels straight, something upstream is wrong. Usually it’s the servo horn installed one spline off, or a steering link that’s the wrong length. The fix there is to power the truck on with trim centered, let the servo find its own neutral, and reinstall the horn in that position. Throttle trim should mostly be left alone. With the throttle released, the wheels should sit still. If they creep forward or backward, first check that the ESC is properly calibrated rather than trimming around the problem. Trim can mask a bad neutral, but the ESC will still be sending a small command all the time, which wastes battery and heats the motor.
Endpoints: Stopping the Servo From Fighting Itself
Endpoint adjustment (often labeled EPA, sometimes just “travel”) sets the hard limit of how far a servo will move in each direction. Steering endpoints are the ones that matter on a crawler.
Here’s the problem they solve. Your servo can rotate further than the steering linkage physically allows. When you hold full lock and the steering knuckle has already hit its mechanical stop, the servo keeps pushing. You’ll hear it: a strained buzzing or grinding sound at full lock. That’s the servo drawing current and stressing its gears against a wall it can’t move.
Do that repeatedly and you strip a servo. On a stock SCX24 with plastic gears, it does not take long.
Setting endpoints:
- Hold the steering wheel at full left lock and keep it there.
- Listen. If the servo is buzzing or straining, turn the left endpoint down until the noise stops and the servo sits quietly at its limit.
- Repeat for the right side. The two sides often need different values, which is normal.
You want the servo to stop just before the linkage binds, not after. A degree or two of unused travel is a fair trade for a servo that lasts.
Set endpoints once after any steering change: new servo, new horn, different links, a knuckle swap. Then leave them alone.
Dual Rate: Making Steering Calmer
Dual rate scales how much of your available steering travel you get from a full turn of the wheel. At 100 percent, full wheel gives you full lock. At 70 percent, full wheel gives you 70 percent of lock.
At first that sounds like it makes the truck worse. It doesn’t, and this is the setting that improved my driving most.
Crawling is a slow, precise activity. You are trying to place a tire on a specific rock, not swing the rear end around. With dual rate at 100 percent, small hand movements produce large steering changes, and it’s easy to overcorrect on a ledge, catch a tire, and tip. Turning dual rate down spreads the same steering range across the full sweep of the wheel, so each degree of hand movement does less. The steering gets easier to meter.
I run around 80 percent on the SCX24 for general trail work and drop toward 70 percent on tight technical stuff where I’m making tiny corrections. The TRX4M has a longer wheelbase and turns wide anyway, so I leave it closer to 90 percent because I need the lock I have.
Start at 80, drive a line you know, then adjust. If you’re running out of turn and having to back up to make a corner, go up. If the truck feels darty and you keep overcorrecting, go down.
Some entry-level radios don’t have a dual rate knob at all. If yours doesn’t, you can approximate it by pulling both steering endpoints down a bit. It’s not the same thing (you’re giving up mechanical lock, not just input sensitivity) but it produces a similar calmer feel.
Once the steering is metered properly, the throttle side becomes the limiting factor. Throttle control basics is the natural next piece, because a calm steering setup and a jumpy throttle finger still ends with the rig on its roof.
What About Expo?
Expo (exponential) changes the curve of the input rather than its limit. Positive steering expo makes the response soft near center and sharper toward the ends. It’s useful, but it’s also the one setting where I’d say most beginners should leave it at zero until trim, endpoints, and dual rate are dialed and understood.
Get the three basics right first. Expo is refinement on top of a working setup, not a substitute for one.
When a Radio Upgrade Is Actually Worth It
Honestly, not soon. The stock radios that ship with the SCX24 and TRX4M have trim, and most have endpoint and dual rate adjustment somewhere in the menu or on a dial. They work fine for the first year.
The reasons to upgrade that hold up:
- Model memory. If you have two or three rigs, storing separate setups per truck saves you re-trimming every time you switch.
- Ergonomics. Stock radios are small and light. If yours cramps your hand on a long session, a better wheel and grip is a real quality-of-life improvement.
- Extra channels. If you’re adding lights, a winch, or a two-speed, you need channels the stock radio doesn’t have.
If none of those apply to you, the money goes further in tires or brass.
What to Buy
You don’t need to buy anything to do everything above. If you’ve hit one of the real reasons to upgrade, these are the ranges worth looking at:
- Solid step-up: Flysky Noble NB4 or similar 4-channel wheel radios, around $150-190, with model memory and a much better grip
- Budget multi-channel: Radiolink RC4GS or RC6GS, around $60-80, which gets you extra channels and model memory without the premium price
- Spare receivers: matched receivers for your radio brand, around $15-25 each, so a second rig can share one transmitter
